Sample Changers:
The
ASM-100 Automatic Sample Management Accessory, referred to as sample
changer, is an electromechanical, robotic device designed to automatically
insert and retrieve samples from the bore of the magnet.
The system is designed for completely automatic unattended operation
and can handle from 1 to 100 samples. When installed, the unit is
attached to the magnet and aligned with the magnet bore.
The basic sample tray can accommodate one hundred 5-mm sample tubes.
Each sample position is individually encoded so that the computer
can address each position either randomly or sequentially. In addition,
each sample location is staggered to provide sure identification of
each sample position.
Sample zero is a default position accessible by the sample changer
in case a sample tube is left in the magnet bore prior to auto sample
operation.
A 50-sample tray that accommodates 5 mm, 10 mm, and 16 mm sample
tubes is available as an accessory.

Sample Changer
The ASM-100 is driven by
three motors; The arm is driven by two motors, and the vertical position
of the arm is controlled by a dc motor. The three-fingered gripper,
which is attached perpendicular to the forearm, is commanded to open
and close by the spectrometer. The entire arm system is mounted on
a heavy-duty aluminum plate attached to the frame of the unit.
The sample tray bottom is a chemically resistant solvent trap in case
a sample accidentally spills or breaks. The sample changer and the
acquisition system communicate through a standard RS-232C link at
9600 baud.
Time between sample changes is programmable and requires approximately
90 seconds for a complete cycle: locate the sample, transport the
sample, place the sample in the magnet bore, retrieve the sample,
and return it to the sample tray.
